Joomla… When Should You Use It?

by admin on June 29, 2009

You may not know what Joomla is… I always thought it would make a great name for my dog. (Good boy Joomla! Bark Bark…)

But Joomla is much more than just a kick butt dog name. It’s a killer CMS (content management system) like Wordpress because it’s free and the search engines love it, but it’s not a blog. It’s more like a typical website that’s template driven.

Let me take a quick tangent and ask you… have you ever wondered, “Why does Google and the lot love Wordpress and Joomla… seriously… did they pay them off or something?”

It’s a good question and one I used to wonder a lot about, but the answer is actually pretty simple. They have nice clean (or cleaner) code and that makes it easy for the spiders to search them. Spiders don’t like to crawl through dirty code. Not to mention Wordpress and Joomla have a slew of plugins that make it even easier to give the spiders what they want to see.

Ok back on track… the question was… When should you use Joomla?

I don’t have a good answer for you because I don’t think there really is one. But here’s when I tend to use Joomla over Wordpress… which doesn’t happen often.

  1. A Hub Site – if you are familiar with Jeff Johnson then you might know about building hub sites or feeder sites to support a money page. I like to use Joomla a lot for these types of sites because usually I put a lot of 100% unique articles on my feeder sites… and Joomla makes a great article database.
  2. No Blog – if I don’t plan on having a blog then I will use Joomla. That doesn’t mean that I won’t update my site regularly… just means I won’t keep a running blog.
  3. If I Want To Mix It Up – if I just feel like mixing it up and creating a Joomla site.

But for all this talk about Joomla I think I only have one site that is active… and… it won’t even last that long. But you can check it out… it’s my copywriting website that has more or less been changed over to this site.

But make sure you learn Joomla because it is REALLY powerful and can do crazy stuff that Wordpress can’t.
